Retaliation Tax

Canada has just issued tariffs on nearly $13 billion worth of U.S. goods in response to the recent steel and aluminum tax that the United States imposed on Canadian imports.  Effective July 1, 2018, hundreds of U.S.-origin products entering into Canada will now face a 10% or 25% duty rate, the same duty the United States imposed on steel and aluminum imports.

The Department of Finance Canada states,

“These countermeasures will take effect on July 1, 2018 and will remain in place until the U.S. eliminates trade-restrictive measures against Canadian steel and aluminum products.  The countermeasures will not apply to U.S. goods that are in transit to Canada on the day on which these countermeasures come into force.”

Steel products will incur a 25% duty rate.  The rest of the items below will incur a 10% duty rate.

The list just gives you a glimpse of some of the products involved.  Some items include:

  • aluminum
  • different foods including yogurt, coffee, maple syrup, candy, ketchup, soups, water and flavored water, mayo, and more
  • Whiskies
  • manicure and pedicure products
  • fungicides and herbicides
  • sacks and bags
  • tableware and kitchenware
  • toilet articles
  • kitchen applicances
  • playing cards
  • ball point pens, markers
  • mattress and sleeping bags
  • lawnmowers
