INTTRA Survey Finds Big Concerns

INTTRA, the world’s largest, multi-carrier e-commerce marketplace for ocean shipping released recent survey results expressing their concern about the new regulation implementation on the “Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS),” and the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) regulations.

This regulation means that containers will not be loaded until weight verification and certification at origin.

Results:

30% said they expected that their company and/or their customers will be prepared for compliance when the regulations are implemented in July 2016
48% said they “have their doubts,”
10% said no.
Two-thirds of respondents said they expected either a moderate or major disruption in the industry.

Respondents foresee the most disruption;
Asia-Pacific (42%)
Africa (22%)

 

“There is serious concern that there are not even enough third-party scale providers to handle this service for the heavy container volumes,” said Beverly Altimore, executive director of the U.S. Shippers Association said to WSJ.
