Outlook Optimistic for Phased Reopening at Ningbo Next Week
The latest reports indicate that the partially shuttered Ningbo port could see a phased reopening starting next week. FreightWaves and others indicate that the reopening effort could start as early as August 25. Previously, Chinese authorities had stated that the port would start reopening the closed terminal on September 6.
West Coast Backsliding into Severe Port Congestion Once More
After making headway on longstanding congestion this summer, the Port of Los Angeles is again seeing severe delays and overwhelming container volumes. According to FreightWaves, anchorage and dwell times are worsening. Terminals and warehouses alike are reaching maximum capacity. Contributing factors include the arrival of traditional peak season and the arrival of containers delayed by the partial closure of the Port of Yantian.
Kansas City Southern Will Vote on CN Merger Next Month
Kansas City Southern’s long and winding search for a merger partner will reach another milestone next month. Shareholders will vote on whether to approve a merger with Canadian railroad CN. KCS had originally sought a merger with Canadian Pacific before CN brought its own offer to the table. A successful merger would create the first continuous commercial railway connecting Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.
Werner Seeks CDL Exemption Rule to Help Combat Driver Shortage
Werner Enterprises has submitted an application for a CDL exemption status to more quickly bring on new drivers. Other commercial carriers have applied for similar exemptions. The effort reflects the trucking industry’s need for new drivers amid a longstanding shortage.
