USTR Proposes New Tariffs on 60 Countries
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) released a report yesterday announcing its findings from a Section 301 investigation into 60 trading partners and their practices related to forced labor.
Based on its findings, USTR is recommending tariffs of 10 to 12.5% on these countries, depending on their ties to forced labor-related goods.
For countries that have imposed or committed to imposing prohibitions on goods produced with forced labor or are committed to preventing the importation of goods associated with forced labor, USTR is recommending an additional 10% tariff on all imports. For all other countries in the investigation, USTR is recommending a 12% tariff rate.
USTR has published a Federal Register notice outlining its proposed actions in full and is requesting public comments. The written comment period is open until July 6, 2026, for interested parties to submit requests related to the investigation.
